We're done with Halloween

And no, I don't mean for the year.

I mean period.

It's hard enough corralling two kids and a baby in a stroller without my husband to help, but add in tons of sugar? Insanity.

We went trick-or-treating with several other families. About six houses into it, a teenage boy in a very spooky mask leaned down into Chloe and Luke's faces and growled and boo'd at them.

I mean, it seriously would have been enough to make even me scream.

It scared them so much that they both ran crying back to me at the end of the driveway! Luke was ok after several minutes, but Chloe just kept getting more and more scared.

She refused to go to any more doors and was huddled by my side.

Huddled.

And any time anyone in a remotely scary costume came near, she started whimpering and hiding behing the stroller. After a few minutes of this, she was in a ball crying and begging to go home. She was so scared that she couldn't even get up to walk back to the car.

Luke, of course, then had a tantrum that we were stopping early and had to go home, and I had to chase him down the street.

Good times.

After all that drama I then had a horde of teenagers with absolutely no costumes come to my door to get candy, and steal the "good stuff" from the one child with them who was young enough to actually be trick-or-treating.

The whole night frustrated me so much (actually is still frustrating me, since Chloe is still asking me several times a day Why, Mommy? WHY would that big boy want to scare me? Why? WHY?) that we are just done. Next year we're going to Chuck E Cheese.

They'll still get to dress up, though. Because the excess sugar and the nightmares I can do without.

But this?

I wouldn't miss for anything.

Dressing up is fun. That is a year round thing here. Candy can be fun. For the kids, at least.I always buy the boys plenty. But we've really limited what Halloween means to us. And survived to tell the tale.

Chuck E. Cheese sounds like a really good option. So sorry your children had their evening ruined.

Last year someone terrified my daughter. And I was ticked. This year, costumeless teens reluctantly came around, acting as though they were doing ME a favor by ringing MY doorbell. It was all insane, so I can see your point :)

Oooooooooh! That would be enough to make me be done with Halloween, too.

Precious, precious flower baby though. :)

We had a similar experience last year, which was Elijah's first time going trick or treating (since it's not done in Japan!), but this year we stayed home and didn't even give out candy. We just couldn't risk the same thing happening. Last year, the first trick or treater to come to our door was dressed as the grimm reaper (sp?), and Elijah let out a scream I will never forget. He shook for a while after. TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT! It's too bad people have to ruin the fun for the cute little ones, but so much of Halloween is about fear and gore. I don't know when or if we'll ever participate in the door to door stuff again. The good thing is that Elijah doesn't know the difference. He didn't even know there was anything to miss out on.

I found your blog on CHMB and just wanted to say hi! I've only read a few of your posts but I love your style of writing. My daughter is 8 months and was a flower as well for Halloween...your daughter is just way too cute!

Oh, I understand Chloe! I am STILL tramautized by someone with a scary mask chasing me, seriously chasing me, when I was young.

Audrey is an incredibly adorable flower!! What were the other kids?

Yeah, ours are very sensitive to any type of gore or display of things that represent evil or even out of the ordinary things. We went to our church's "Hallelujah Festival" which recommends no scary or scantily clad costumes, so it was a nice safe place to play games and get only a little bit of candy. They were happy, and have no idea that they might be "missing out"

So sorry to read about your bade night out! I don't understand peoples need to put fear in any one let alone children! These costumeless teens get at me too! This year our church did a Trunk or Treat, that when really well.

How adorable.

We skipped the whole deal and went out to dinner and did some shopping. (I don't have any hangups about Halloween except for the sugar overdose.) The kids came home with one piece of candy and I don't have to deal with cranky kids for the next few weeks. I'm a mean mom with happy kids.
